Housing Deposit

Pre-paid deposit:

As soon as the IAO has registered your pre-paid deposit you will receive an e-mail confirmation. Please allow up to two weeks before you receive the confirmation.

Refunding deposit:

Usually, the housing deposit is equal to approximately two months' rent but can also be three months' rent. You must pay DKK 2,000 in advance and the remainder of the deposit on arrival. You will usually get the deposit back after having left Denmark. It will be sent to your home address as a cheque or transferred to your bank account according to your wishes specified on the departure slip which you are to fill in before your departure. There is a fee (at the moment DKK 45) for the bank transfer or (DKK 150) sending cheques and therefore the reimbursed amount will be less than the original paid amount. Also the exchange rate can change and influence on the amount returned.

Please note that if your are leaving your accommodation in the Summer (June/July/August) the IAO will return your deposit after the 15th of September. If you are leaving the accommodation in the Winter (December/January/February) the International Accommodation Office will return your deposit after the 15th of March. According to the Danish law the International Accommodation Office can keep your deposit up to 6 months to check for extra heating, water and electricity bills. The International Accommodation Office very seldom keeps a deposit this long.

If repairs beyond normal wear have to be made after you have moved out, and if the room is not clean, the cost will be deducted from your deposit. Likewise, if you have not paid the electricity, heating and water or maintenance fee on a monthly basis, these costs will also be deducted from your deposit.

If you use much more electricity, heating etc. than expected, the International Accommmodation Office will deduct DKK 300 from your deposit. When the final bill from the electricity or heating company arrives, there will be a final calculation for the tenancy. If the difference is less than DKK 300, you will receive this amount on a cheque. The cheque will be sent to your home address or transferred to your bank account depending on your wishes. This can take up to several months, so please be patient.
